This fan painting by Zhou Chen, a professional artist active during the Ming Dynasty, displays the technical precision characteristic of the Suzhou school. The composition is constrained by the semi-circular format of the fan, which the artist uses to frame a quiet scene of scholarly seclusion. In the centre, two figures sit among jagged rock formations, while a third figure stands nearby with a staff, suggesting a narrative of travel or philosophical exchange. The pine trees, rendered with deliberate, textured brushwork, lean over the rocky outcrop, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal flow of the water below.
Zhou Chen was known for his versatility, moving between the refined styles of the literati and the more descriptive, professional modes of the era.
