Luo Ping, a member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, produced this work in 1764. The composition depicts a scholar and his young attendant standing upon a rocky outcrop, observing a waterfall that descends from a towering cliff face. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on ink washes to define the rugged textures of the stone and the fluid motion of the water. The figures are rendered with delicate, precise lines, contrasting with the more expressive, gestural brushwork used for the surrounding natural elements.

This piece reflects the literati tradition, where the act of viewing nature serves as a meditative practice for the scholar. The vertical orientation of the scroll emphasises the height of the cliff, while the negative space surrounding the figures creates a sense of quietude.
