An allegorical etching by Dutch Golden Age artist Samuel van Hoogstraten, featuring a central female figure surrounded by putti amidst clouds.
This etching by Samuel van Hoogstraten depicts the allegorical figure of 'Schoone Roseliin'. The composition features a central female figure surrounded by a cluster of putti, all set against a background of swirling clouds. The artist employs a series of fine, parallel lines to create the atmospheric effect of light radiating from above, a technique common in seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking.
Van Hoogstraten, a pupil of Rembrandt, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the varied weight of his lines. The central figure holds a spear, while the surrounding putti engage in various activities, including holding objects that suggest a narrative or symbolic meaning. The work reflects the period's interest in classical allegory and the use of print media to disseminate complex visual ideas. The etching process allows for a high degree of control over the tonal values, which the artist uses to separate the foreground figures from the ethereal, cloud-filled space behind them.
As a printmaker, van Hoogstraten was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his training into the more rigid medium of the copper plate. The cross-hatching in the upper corners provides a sense of depth and enclosure, drawing the viewer's eye toward the central subject. This piece is a clear example of the Dutch Golden Age tradition, where mythological and allegorical subjects were frequently explored through the medium of black and white prints. The work remains a fine example of the period's aesthetic, characterised by its balance of form and its use of light to define space.
