Penfield's advertising poster for the April issue of Scribner's Magazine, one of the leading American literary monthlies of the late 19th century. Scribner's competed directly with Harper's for readership among the educated middle class, and both magazines invested heavily in poster art during the 1890s.
Scribner's Magazine (1887–1939) published fiction by Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway, among others. During the 1890s poster boom, the magazine commissioned cover art and advertising posters from leading illustrators. Penfield's work for Scribner's is less well known than his Harper's output, but follows the same approach: a single figure, limited colour, and the magazine title prominently placed.
The fact that Penfield took this commission while serving as Harper's art director suggests either a flexible non-compete arrangement or a period between contracts. His Scribner's posters are rare and represent some of the most interesting cross-pollination in 1890s American publishing, where the same handful of illustrators defined the visual identity of competing titles.
Often called the father of the American poster, Penfield served as art director of Harper's Magazine from 1890 to 1901, producing over 100 cover designs during that period. His style drew on Japanese woodblock printing and the French affiche tradition: flat areas of colour, bold outlines, and minimal detail. He became one of the most recognised illustrators of the American Art Nouveau movement, and his wartime posters remain some of the most widely studied examples of early 20th-century graphic propaganda.
