A raw and visceral depiction of a skull in Jean-Michel Basquiat's signature neo-expressionist style, characterised by chaotic colours, abstract shapes, and graffiti-like marks.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, writing cryptic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of Lower Manhattan during the late 1970s. By the 1980s, he was exhibiting his neo-expressionist paintings in galleries and museums internationally. 'Scull' presents a raw, visceral depiction of a skull rendered in Basquiat's signature style. The skull is outlined with heavy black lines, filled with a chaotic mix of colours and abstract shapes. The background consists of broad strokes of blue and orange paint, creating a sense of urgency and energy. The painting is characterised by its spontaneous, graffiti-like marks and the use of text fragments, which add layers of meaning and complexity to the composition. Basquiat's work often explores themes of identity, race, and social commentary, reflecting his experiences and observations of the world around him.
