A modernist study of a seated female figure, rendered in bold, geometric planes and a balanced, simplified colour palette.
Vilhelm Lundstrøm was a central figure in Danish modernism, known for his reduction of form and his engagement with the principles of Purism and Cubism. This work demonstrates his characteristic approach to the human figure, where anatomical detail is sacrificed for the sake of structural clarity and geometric balance. The seated subject is rendered through broad, flat planes of colour, which define the volume of the body against a simplified background.
Lundstrøm often utilised a restricted palette to focus the viewer on the relationship between shapes and space. In this composition, the figure is constructed from blocks of peach, yellow, and soft pink, while the surrounding environment is articulated in cooler tones of blue and muted green. The contours of the body are suggested by bold, simplified lines rather than traditional modelling, a technique that aligns with his interest in the essential properties of the painted surface. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs attention to the rhythmic arrangement of the torso and limbs.
This approach reflects the influence of French modernism, particularly the work of artists like Fernand Léger and Georges Braque, which Lundstrøm encountered during his time in Paris. His work from this period is defined by a rigorous search for order and stability. The figure does not exist in a narrative context but functions as an element within a carefully calibrated visual system. The result is a composition that prioritises the physical presence of the paint and the architectural integrity of the image over descriptive realism. This print captures the texture and tonal shifts of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of Lundstrøm's methodical application of colour and his commitment to a refined, modernist aesthetic.
