A 1790 prize-winning academic study in red chalk, depicting a seated male nude with precise anatomical detail.
This academic study by Derk Anthony van de Wart, executed in 1790, demonstrates the rigorous training standards of the late eighteenth-century Dutch art academies. The work, titled 'Zittend mannelijk naakt, op de rug gezien', earned the artist a first prize, a common accolade for students who demonstrated mastery in anatomical rendering and the use of red chalk (sanguine).
The drawing depicts a male figure seated upon a block, viewed from behind. The artist employs the medium to build volume through hatching and cross-hatching, effectively modelling the musculature of the back, shoulders, and legs. The light source, originating from the upper left, casts shadows that define the contours of the body against the plain background. The composition is structured around the geometric simplicity of the seating blocks, which serve to ground the figure and provide a clear sense of spatial orientation.
Van de Wart shows a precise understanding of human anatomy, typical of the period's focus on classical ideals. The inscription 'Primum Praemium' confirms the work's status as a prize-winning submission. Such drawings were essential components of an artist's education, intended to prove their ability to capture the human form with accuracy and technical control. The choice of red chalk allows for a soft transition between light and shadow, providing a warmth that contrasts with the clinical nature of the anatomical exercise. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the delicate tonal variations of the chalk, offering a view into the pedagogical practices of the era.
