An academic figure study in black and white chalk, created by Jean Grandjean in 1775 for the Amsterdam Academy.
This academic study by Jean Grandjean depicts a seated male figure in profile, a work produced during his training in Amsterdam. The drawing earned the artist the second prize at the Amsterdam Academy in 1775, an achievement noted in the Latin inscription visible in the upper left corner. Grandjean employs black and white chalk on grey paper, a technique common in eighteenth-century art education for mastering anatomical form and light.
The figure is positioned on a simple block, his body angled to demonstrate the artist's grasp of musculature and skeletal structure. The lighting is directional, casting shadows that define the torso, thighs, and calves. Grandjean uses the white chalk to pick out highlights on the shoulder, knee, and shin, creating a sense of volume against the mid-tone of the paper. The background remains largely unworked, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the physical presence of the model.
Such drawings were standard exercises for students at the time, intended to demonstrate proficiency in rendering the human form from life. The inclusion of the artist's signature on the base of the block provides a clear provenance for this specific competition piece. The composition is restrained, reflecting the pedagogical focus on accuracy and proportion. This print captures the texture of the original chalk marks, preserving the subtle gradations of tone that define the figure's posture. It offers a view into the rigorous training methods of the late eighteenth-century Dutch art scene, where technical precision was the primary objective for aspiring painters.
