A study of a man in repose by Dutch artist Cornelis Dusart, rendered in chalk and watercolour on paper.
This study by Cornelis Dusart captures a moment of quiet repose, typical of the genre scenes produced during the late Dutch Golden Age. Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, specialised in depicting the daily lives of the peasantry and lower classes. His work often focuses on the informal, unposed nature of his subjects, providing a glimpse into the social habits of the period.
The figure is depicted in a relaxed posture, leaning back in a simple rush-seated chair. He holds a clay pipe, a common accessory in seventeenth-century Dutch genre art, which often served as a symbol of leisure or contemplation. The artist employs a technique involving chalk and subtle washes of colour, which allows for a soft, atmospheric quality. The use of a toned paper ground provides a mid-tone that unifies the composition, while the red chalk highlights on the face and hands suggest a warmth that contrasts with the cooler tones of the clothing.
Dusart demonstrates a keen eye for characterisation. The man's expression, directed upwards, suggests a state of distraction or perhaps the enjoyment of a quiet moment. The lines are fluid and descriptive, capturing the folds of the fabric and the structure of the chair with economy. This work reflects the artist's interest in the human form in a state of rest, moving away from the more chaotic tavern scenes often associated with his contemporaries. The composition is balanced, with the diagonal line of the figure's body creating a sense of stability. It remains a fine example of the draughtsmanship prevalent in Haarlem at the turn of the eighteenth century, where the focus shifted toward more refined, individualised studies of character.
