A delicate study of a man in quiet concentration, rendered in chalk and watercolour by Dutch artist Cornelis Dusart.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, was a master of capturing the quiet, everyday moments of Dutch life. This study of a seated man reading demonstrates his ability to render human form with both precision and empathy. The subject is captured in a moment of solitary focus, his posture hunched over a small book held in his hands. The composition is simple, placing the figure against a plain background to ensure the viewer concentrates on the man's physical presence and the act of reading.
Dusart employs a delicate use of chalk and watercolour to define the textures of the man's clothing and the soft features of his face. The muted palette of ochre, grey, and soft pinks creates a sense of warmth and intimacy. The man wears a simple cap and loose trousers, typical of the working-class figures often depicted in Dutch genre works of the late seventeenth century. His expression is one of quiet concentration, a common theme in Dusart's oeuvre, which often explored the lives of ordinary people in their domestic or rural settings.
This work reflects the broader Dutch interest in genre scenes, where the focus shifted from grand historical or religious narratives to the observation of daily life. Dusart's technique here is characteristic of his drawings, which often served as preparatory studies for his prints or paintings. The lines are controlled yet expressive, providing a clear sense of volume and weight to the seated figure. By isolating the man on the page, Dusart invites the viewer to observe the small details: the way his fingers grip the book, the slight tilt of his head, and the casual arrangement of his legs on the stool. It is a study of human character, rendered with the technical skill that defined the later years of the Dutch Golden Age.
