This etching by Hieronymus Cock, dated 1550, captures the decaying grandeur of Roman architecture. Cock, a Flemish printmaker and publisher, travelled to Italy during the mid-sixteenth century. His observations of Roman ruins provided the source material for his series of prints, which circulated the visual language of antiquity throughout Northern Europe.

The composition features two massive, crumbling archways that dominate the foreground. These structures, identified as remnants of the Baths of Diocletian, are rendered with precise, hatched lines that define the texture of weathered brick and stone. Vegetation clings to the upper reaches of the masonry, suggesting the passage of time and the reclamation of the site by nature. Through the central opening, a distant view of the Roman countryside emerges, providing a sense of scale and atmospheric depth.
