A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro, depicting the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojō II in a traditional female role.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojō II in a female role. The Torii school held a dominant position in the production of theatrical imagery during the mid-eighteenth century, often focusing on the exaggerated poses and stylised features of popular performers. The artist employs a benizuri-e technique, which uses a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to the monochrome ink base.
The figure stands in a graceful, slightly curved posture, characteristic of the period's aesthetic. The actor wears an elaborate kimono decorated with a repeating floral pattern, which demonstrates the attention to textile design common in ukiyo-e prints. The head is covered by a hood, a frequent accessory for female characters in kabuki theatre, which frames the face and directs attention to the actor's expression. The calligraphic lines defining the robes and the figure's form show the technical precision required for woodblock carving.
Textual elements are integrated into the composition, providing context for the performance or the actor's identity. The flat spatial arrangement is typical of the era, prioritising the decorative qualities of the costume and the silhouette of the figure over three-dimensional depth. This print offers a view into the visual culture of Edo-period Japan, where the theatre and the print industry were closely linked. The work remains a clear example of the Torii school's approach to actor portraiture, balancing the representation of the individual with the requirements of theatrical iconography. The muted colour scheme, aged by time, provides a soft aesthetic that complements the delicate line work of the original woodblock.
