A refined woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicting the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo II standing beneath a willow tree.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo II. The artist was active during the mid-Edo period and gained recognition for his yakusha-e, or actor prints. His work is noted for a departure from the more stylised, exaggerated features seen in earlier prints, favouring a refined and slender aesthetic that captures the specific likeness of the performer.
In this composition, the actor is shown in a moment of quietude, sheltered by a large, ochre-toned umbrella. The figure stands beneath the sweeping branches of a willow tree, which provides a vertical frame for the subject. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greys, soft blues, and the warm yellow of the umbrella to create a balanced visual experience. The lines are delicate and precise, characteristic of the artist's approach to capturing the grace of the kabuki stage.
Bunchō often collaborated with other artists, yet his individual prints remain distinct for their focus on the psychological presence of the actor. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e process, where multiple woodblocks were carved to apply separate colours to the paper. The composition is balanced, with the actor's posture echoing the gentle curve of the willow branches. This piece offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where actors were celebrated as fashion icons and cultural figures. The print serves as a record of a specific performance style, preserved through the medium of the woodblock print.
