A contemporary reinterpretation of a seventeenth-century lute player, featuring photographic manipulation and a distinct blue-toned palette by Dutch artist Aat Veldhoen.
This work by Aat Veldhoen represents a dialogue between historical Dutch painting and twentieth-century experimental techniques. Veldhoen, a draughtsman and printmaker known for his direct approach to the human figure, engages here with the seventeenth-century tradition of the self-portrait. The base image is a photographic reproduction of a work depicting a lute player, a common motif in the Dutch Golden Age, which Veldhoen has modified through his own artistic intervention.
The visual result is a transformation of the original composition into a spectral, inverted state. The colours shift into cool blues, violets, and pale whites, creating a sense of distance from the source material. The surface appears textured, suggesting that Veldhoen applied additional media over the photograph to disrupt the clarity of the original image. This process creates a tension between the historical subject matter and the modern, almost abstract, execution. The signature 'Veldhoenski' at the base of the print adds a personal, informal touch, referencing the artist's own identity while simultaneously acknowledging the historical weight of the lute player archetype.
Veldhoen often explored the boundaries of reproduction and originality. By taking a classic image and subjecting it to physical alteration, he questions the permanence of historical art. The work does not attempt to replicate the precision of the seventeenth-century original, but rather seeks to recontextualise it within a contemporary framework. The resulting print offers a unique perspective on the act of looking at art, where the viewer is invited to consider both the historical source and the modern artist's hand. This piece is an example of Veldhoen's interest in the intersection of photography and traditional drawing, demonstrating his willingness to manipulate existing imagery to create new visual narratives.
