A conceptual self-portrait by Man Ray, featuring a handprint and found objects, reflecting his early Dadaist experimentation with assemblage.
Man Ray, born Emmanuel Radnitzky, occupied a unique position within the early twentieth-century avant-garde. This work, dating to his early period in New York, demonstrates his interest in the construction of identity through non-traditional media. Rather than a conventional painted or photographic likeness, the artist presents a conceptual arrangement of objects that function as a surrogate for the self. The composition features a central handprint, a recurring motif in his work that suggests a direct, physical connection between the creator and the surface.
Surrounding this central element are various found objects, including circular forms that evoke mechanical or industrial components. These items are placed against a dark, textured background, creating a stark contrast that draws the eye toward the central white area. The inclusion of linear elements, which appear almost like technical diagrams or schematics, adds a sense of precision to the otherwise abstract arrangement. This approach aligns with the Dadaist rejection of traditional artistic values, favouring instead the use of everyday items to provoke thought and question the nature of representation.
By assembling these disparate elements, Man Ray avoids the limitations of a standard portrait. He invites the viewer to consider the artist not as a fixed subject, but as a collection of signs, gestures, and materials. The work reflects his early experimentation with the camera as a tool for documenting his own sculptural and assemblage-based practice. The resulting image is a study in texture, form, and the deliberate ambiguity that would define his later career in Paris. It remains a clear example of his ability to transform mundane objects into a cohesive, albeit enigmatic, visual statement.
