A striking 1893 self-portrait by Käthe Kollwitz, utilising etching and aquatint to explore light, shadow, and the solitary nature of the artist.
Käthe Kollwitz produced this self-portrait in 1893, early in her career. It demonstrates her technical command of etching and aquatint, a medium she favoured for its capacity to render deep, atmospheric shadows. The composition centres on the artist seated at a table, illuminated by a single lamp. The light source creates a stark contrast against the surrounding darkness, drawing the viewer's attention to her face and the paper before her.
Kollwitz often used her own image to explore themes of isolation, introspection, and the creative process. In this work, the heavy use of aquatint creates a dense, velvety background that pushes the figure forward. Her expression is direct and unadorned, reflecting the psychological honesty that characterises much of her later output. The lamp, while providing light, also serves to define the boundaries of her workspace, suggesting a solitary environment dedicated to artistic labour.
This print is an example of the artist's early mastery of tonal variation. By manipulating the acid bath and the application of resin, she achieved a range of blacks and greys that give the scene a sense of weight and quietude. The work avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the interplay between light and shadow. It provides a glimpse into the private world of an artist who would go on to become one of the most significant printmakers of the twentieth century. The print is signed in pencil below the plate mark, a common practice for her editions. This piece remains a primary example of her ability to convey mood through technical precision and stark visual economy.
