A detailed study of Luca Signorelli's self-portrait, extracted from his monumental fresco cycle in the Orvieto Cathedral.
This image is a detail from the larger fresco cycle located in the Chapel of San Brizio within the Orvieto Cathedral. Luca Signorelli, a master of the Italian Renaissance, included this self-portrait alongside a depiction of Fra Angelico within the scene titled The Preaching and Acts of the Antichrist. The work displays the artist's characteristic focus on human anatomy and psychological presence.
The portrait captures the artist in his mid-fifties. He wears a dark, simple cap and a tunic, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a steady, observant expression. Signorelli employs a firm modelling technique, using light and shadow to define the structure of the face, the furrowed brow, and the texture of the skin. His long, light-brown hair frames the face, contrasting with the dark tones of his headgear. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the technical demands of fresco painting, where the artist must work quickly while the plaster remains damp.
Signorelli was known for his ability to render the human form with great physical weight and volume. This detail demonstrates his skill in portraiture, moving away from the more stylised depictions of the earlier Quattrocento towards a more naturalistic representation of the individual. The inclusion of his own likeness within a grand narrative cycle was a common practice among Renaissance painters, allowing them to assert their identity and professional status within the context of their religious commissions. This print captures the weathered, thoughtful features of the artist, providing a direct connection to the creative mind behind one of the most ambitious decorative programmes of the period.
