An intimate self-portrait by Dutch artist Floris Arntzenius, rendered in watercolour with a focus on light, mood, and candid observation.
This self-portrait by the Dutch artist Floris Arntzenius captures a candid, informal moment. Arntzenius, a member of the later generation of the Hague School, is often associated with his atmospheric cityscapes of The Hague. This work, however, offers a more intimate view of the artist. He depicts himself with a cigarette, his gaze directed away from the viewer, suggesting a sense of introspection or perhaps a brief pause during his working day.
The application of watercolour here demonstrates the artist's technical control. He uses a muted, earthy palette for his clothing and the background, which allows the striking red of his headgear to draw the eye. The wash techniques create soft transitions in tone, particularly across the face, where light and shadow define his features with subtle precision. The inclusion of the cigarette, with a faint wisp of smoke, adds a layer of realism to the composition, grounding the portrait in a specific, everyday reality.
Arntzenius studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and later in Antwerp. His training is evident in the structural integrity of the portrait, despite the fluid nature of the medium. While he is better known for his busy street scenes, this study reveals his ability to handle portraiture with the same attention to light and mood that defined his broader body of work. The composition is direct and unadorned, focusing entirely on the subject's expression and the play of light across his face. It provides a glimpse into the personal life of an artist who spent much of his career observing the public life of his city.
