A 1876 self-portrait by Dutch artist Hendrik Hollander Cz., featuring the painter in a style reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture.
This self-portrait by the Dutch painter Hendrik Hollander Cz. dates to 1876. The work displays the artist in a manner that recalls the traditions of the Dutch Golden Age, a period that exerted a strong influence on nineteenth-century painters in the Netherlands. Hollander depicts himself wearing a dark, wide-brimmed hat and a white lace collar, elements that evoke the sartorial style of the seventeenth century. His expression is direct, with his gaze meeting the viewer through thin-rimmed spectacles.
The composition is contained within an oval format, a common device in portraiture to focus attention on the sitter. The background is rendered in muted, warm ochre tones, which contrast with the dark clothing and the pale lace. The artist's brushwork is controlled, allowing for a clear definition of his features, including his beard and the texture of the lace. The signature and date, 'HH 1876', are visible on the right side of the canvas.
Hollander was active during a time when Dutch art was transitioning between the established academic traditions and the emerging interest in realism. His work often reflects a technical proficiency in handling light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, which he employs here to model his face and provide a sense of volume. The portrait is presented in a gilded frame, which complements the warm palette of the painting. This piece offers a view into the personal identity of a nineteenth-century artist who looked back to the masters of his national heritage for inspiration and stylistic guidance. The painting remains a representative example of the portraiture produced by Hollander during his career in the Netherlands.
