A poignant 1860 self-portrait by Ukrainian artist Taras Shevchenko, rendered in etching and aquatint with a focus on psychological realism.
This etching and aquatint, produced by Taras Shevchenko in 1860, captures the artist in his final years. The work demonstrates his technical proficiency in printmaking, a medium he pursued with rigour during his time in Saint Petersburg. The composition focuses on the head and shoulders of the subject, emerging from a darkened, atmospheric background created through fine cross-hatching and tonal aquatint washes.
Shevchenko presents himself with a direct, unadorned gaze. His expression is weary, reflecting the physical and emotional toll of his earlier years of exile and political struggle. The dark suit blends into the surrounding shadow, directing the viewer's attention to the face, where the artist employs subtle variations in line weight to define the contours of his features and his characteristic moustache. The texture of the paper and the visible plate mark provide a tactile quality to the print, characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century intaglio processes.
As a central figure in Ukrainian culture, Shevchenko used his artistic practice to document his own identity and the human condition. This self-portrait is devoid of romanticised embellishment. Instead, it offers a stark, honest depiction of the individual. The signature at the bottom, written in his own hand, anchors the work in a specific moment of his life, just one year before his death. The print remains a significant example of his late-period graphic work, showing his ability to convey psychological depth through minimal means and controlled tonal values.
