A compelling self portrait by Jean-Michel Basquiat, rendered in his signature Neo-expressionist style. The work features bold lines, primitive figures, and a patchwork of muted colours.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Emerging from the New York City graffiti subculture, Basquiat's work gained recognition in the 1980s Neo-expressionist scene. His paintings often combine graffiti-like imagery with historical, literary, and personal references. He died of a drug overdose at the age of 27. His work continues to influence contemporary art and culture. This untitled work presents a full-length figure rendered in a primitive, almost childlike style. The figure, presumably a self-portrait, is composed of simple lines and shapes, with an emphasis on bold outlines and flat planes of colour. The background is a patchwork of muted yellows, greens, and reds, creating a sense of depth and texture. The figure's head is adorned with spiky, hair-like projections, and its arms are outstretched, holding what appear to be rudimentary tools or weapons. The overall effect is one of raw energy and emotion, typical of Basquiat's style.
