A raw and unsettling self-portrait by Austrian Expressionist Richard Gerstl, 'Self-Portrait Laughing' captures the artist's intense emotional state through vigorous brushwork and earthy colours.
Richard Gerstl (1883-1908) was an Austrian painter known for his intense, emotionally charged Expressionist works. Though his career was brief, ending with his suicide at the age of 25, Gerstl produced a body of work that anticipates later developments in Expressionism and Abstraction. He was an outsider, both personally and artistically, and his work was not widely recognised during his lifetime. 'Self-Portrait Laughing' is a raw and unsettling depiction of the artist. The brushwork is vigorous and the colours are earthy, dominated by browns and ochres. Gerstl's face is contorted in a wide, almost manic grin, which, rather than conveying joy, seems to express a sense of unease or even despair. The background is indistinct, adding to the feeling of isolation and psychological intensity. The painting is characterised by its unflinching honesty and emotional rawness, making it a powerful example of early Expressionist portraiture.
