This late-period self-portrait by Titian, painted when the artist was in his late seventies, offers a direct encounter with the Venetian master. The composition is restrained, focusing on the psychological presence of the subject rather than elaborate staging. Titian depicts himself in a dark, fur-lined garment, his gaze directed away from the viewer towards an unseen point, suggesting a sense of contemplation or weariness.

The application of paint demonstrates the artist's mature technique, characterised by a freedom of brushwork that moves away from the precise contours of his earlier works. The surface appears textured and atmospheric, with light catching the folds of his white shirt and the heavy fabric of his coat. The palette is dominated by sombre, earthy tones, which serve to draw attention to the weathered features of his face and the intensity of his expression.

Unlike the idealised portraits of his youth, this work presents an unvarnished view of the artist. It captures the physical reality of ageing, yet maintains a sense of authority.
