A raw and expressive self-portrait by Richard Gerstl, featuring his characteristic rhythmic brushwork and an unconventional, stippled blue background.
Richard Gerstl remains a singular figure within the Viennese art scene of the early twentieth century. This self-portrait, executed in 1907, demonstrates his departure from the prevailing academic standards of the period. Gerstl rejected the polished surfaces favoured by his contemporaries, opting instead for a raw, immediate application of paint that prioritises emotional intensity over anatomical precision.
The composition features the artist standing in a formal pose, yet the execution undermines this traditional structure. His jacket is rendered with rhythmic, repetitive brushstrokes that create a textured, almost vibrating surface. This technique draws the eye across the canvas, blurring the distinction between the figure and the surrounding space. The background consists of a chaotic, stippled application of blue pigment against a warmer, peach-toned ground, which creates a jarring visual tension.
Gerstl worked in relative isolation, largely ignored by the established art institutions of Vienna during his short life. His approach to portraiture often involved a psychological excavation of the subject. In this work, the direct gaze of the artist confronts the viewer, while the agitated paint handling suggests an internal restlessness. The colour palette is unconventional, relying on the contrast between the cool, dappled blues and the earthy tones of the face and hands. This work provides a clear view into the development of Austrian Expressionism, showing a move away from decorative concerns toward a more subjective, visceral style of painting. The lack of finish in the traditional sense allows the viewer to observe the physical process of creation, as every mark remains visible on the surface of the canvas.
