A powerful 1940 self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, depicting the artist in a man's suit following her divorce, surrounded by her own shorn hair.
Painted in 1940, this work depicts Frida Kahlo shortly after her divorce from Diego Rivera. The artist sits on a yellow chair, wearing an oversized man's suit that obscures her feminine form. She holds a pair of scissors in her right hand, while locks of her shorn hair are scattered across the floor, surrounding the chair like dark, tangled threads.
The composition is stark and direct. Kahlo stares forward with a composed expression, her gaze meeting the viewer. Above her head, the artist has inscribed a line from a popular Mexican song: 'Look, if I loved you, it was for your hair, now that you are shorn, I do not love you anymore.' The inclusion of musical notation above the lyrics adds a layer of auditory context to the visual scene, linking the painting to the cultural traditions of her homeland.
This piece functions as a visual record of personal transformation and the rejection of traditional gender expectations. By discarding her long hair and feminine attire, Kahlo asserts her independence. The muted, earthy tones of the floor contrast with the pale, atmospheric sky, creating a sense of isolation. The painting remains a significant example of Kahlo's ability to externalise internal states through symbolic imagery. It avoids the typical romanticised portraiture of the period, opting instead for a raw, unflinching examination of identity and loss. The work is currently held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
