A raw, psychological self-portrait by Oskar Kokoschka, painted in 1909. This work captures the artist's early Expressionist style through intense colour and direct, agitated brushwork.
Oskar Kokoschka painted this self-portrait in 1909, during his early years in Vienna. The work captures the artist at a time when he was moving away from the decorative influence of the Vienna Secession toward a more raw, psychological mode of representation. His brushwork is agitated and direct, focusing on the physical presence of the sitter rather than a polished finish.
The composition features the artist with his arms crossed, a posture that conveys a sense of defensive introspection. His gaze is fixed, directed toward the viewer with an intensity that characterises much of his early portraiture. The background is composed of blocks of colour, which serve to isolate the figure and push him toward the front of the picture plane. This technique creates a tension between the subject and his environment, suggesting a state of internal conflict or unease.
Kokoschka uses a palette of deep blues, ochres, and reds to define the form. The application of paint is heavy, with visible strokes that trace the contours of his face and the folds of his suit. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs attention to the psychological state of the subject. This approach was typical of the Expressionist movement, which sought to externalise inner experience through distortion and colour. The work remains a primary example of Kokoschka's ability to capture the subjective reality of his subjects, providing a window into the anxieties of the early twentieth-century Viennese intellectual circle.
