A self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, the painting features the artist's direct gaze and distinctive features, set against a muted background. The work is characterised by its unflinching portrayal and quiet strength.
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artefacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country's popular culture, she employed a naïve folk-art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with surrealist fantasy. Kahlo was a member of the Mexican Communist Party. She married fellow artist Diego Rivera in 1928; their relationship was volatile and involved numerous affairs, separations, and reconciliations. This self-portrait presents Kahlo in a straightforward, almost confrontational manner. Her gaze is direct, and her features are rendered with a stark realism. She wears a simple white blouse trimmed with lace, drawing attention to the necklace of dark, possibly stone, beads around her neck. The background is a muted grey-blue, which serves to isolate the figure and intensify the focus on her face. The painting is characterised by its unflinching portrayal of the artist, capturing her distinctive features, including her prominent eyebrows and subtle moustache. The overall effect is one of quiet strength and introspection.

Real reviews from real customers
Started painting in a body cast after a bus crash at eighteen, married Diego Rivera twice, and told Breton she was not a Surrealist.
