A detailed etching by Constantino Cumano, capturing a figure in a plumed beret and fur-lined cloak, inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture.
This etching by Constantino Cumano depicts a figure in a plumed beret, resting a hand upon the hilt of a sabre. The composition draws heavily from the stylistic conventions of seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, particularly the works of Rembrandt. Cumano employs a technique of dense cross-hatching and varied line weights to construct the texture of the fur-lined cloak and the soft curls of the subject's hair. The play of light across the face and the deliberate posture suggest a study in character and historical costume.
Cumano, an Italian artist active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often engaged with the printmaking traditions of the past. This work reflects an interest in the 'tronie', a genre of portraiture focused on character studies or exaggerated expressions rather than formal likenesses. The subject appears in an elaborate outfit, complete with a feathered cap, which serves to distance the image from contemporary fashion and place it within a more theatrical or historical context. The etching process allows for a high degree of control over the tonal values, which Cumano uses to create a sense of volume and presence within the figure. The background remains largely unworked, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's gaze and the tactile quality of his attire. This print provides a clear example of how European artists of the period looked back to the Golden Age of Dutch art to inform their own graphic output, prioritising technical precision and the exploration of light and shadow.
