Frida Kahlo's 1954 painting, *Self-Portrait with Stalin*, is a powerful exploration of the artist's political beliefs and personal search for a father figure, rendered in her signature expressive style.
Painted in 1954, the year of her death, Frida Kahlo's *Self-Portrait with Stalin* reflects the artist's complex political views and personal struggles. Kahlo was a committed communist, and her admiration for Joseph Stalin is evident in the prominent portrait of him in the background. The painting is not a straightforward endorsement, however. It can be interpreted as a commentary on Kahlo's search for a father figure, following the death of her own father and the disillusionment she felt towards Diego Rivera. Stalin, in this context, represents an idealised, powerful leader. The composition places Kahlo in the foreground, seated and wearing a traditional Mexican shawl. Behind her, on an easel, is a portrait of Stalin. A globe is visible to the right of Stalin's portrait. The colour palette is dominated by earth tones, with the red of Kahlo's shawl providing a striking contrast. The brushwork is expressive, with visible strokes that add to the painting's emotional intensity. The work offers a glimpse into Kahlo's inner world, where politics, personal identity, and artistic expression intertwine.
