A striking self-portrait by Joseph Ducreux, capturing the artist in a candid, unposed moment of yawning and stretching.
Joseph Ducreux was a French portraitist who served as the first painter to King Louis XVI. While he was trained in the formal traditions of the eighteenth-century French court, he frequently deviated from the rigid conventions of aristocratic portraiture. This work, often referred to as his 'yawning' self-portrait, represents a departure from the stoic, posed imagery expected of a painter of his station. Instead, Ducreux captures a fleeting, visceral human moment with remarkable technical precision.
The composition is stark and direct. Ducreux positions himself against a dark, neutral background, which forces the viewer to focus entirely on his physical state. His mouth is wide open in a genuine yawn, his eyes are squinted, and his right arm is extended upward in a natural, unforced stretch. The red of his coat provides a sharp contrast to the muted tones of his waistcoat and the dark void behind him. The brushwork is smooth, typical of the period, yet the subject matter is unconventional. By choosing to depict himself in such an unguarded, mundane state, Ducreux explores the boundaries of expression and the potential for portraiture to capture psychological reality rather than merely social status.
This painting is part of a series of self-portraits in which Ducreux experimented with physiognomy and extreme facial expressions. These works were not commissioned by patrons but were personal explorations of the human form. They demonstrate his ability to render light, shadow, and anatomy with high accuracy while subverting the expectations of his contemporaries. The work remains a curious example of eighteenth-century artistic experimentation, showing a painter who was willing to abandon decorum to study the mechanics of human fatigue.
