A geometric portrait by Paul Klee, featuring a stylised face composed of circles and rectangles in warm, muted tones.
Senecio, painted in 1922, is one of the most recognisable works by Paul Klee. The title refers to the genus of flowering plants known as ragwort, yet the image presents a stylised human face. Klee reduces the human head to a series of geometric shapes: a large circle contains the features, while the face itself is divided into rectangular segments of colour. The composition relies on a balance between the circular form of the head and the rigid, grid-like arrangement of the facial planes. The colour palette is restrained, focusing on warm ochres, soft pinks, and whites, punctuated by the stark red of the pupils. One eye is depicted as a triangle, while the other is a simple curve, suggesting a mask or a puppet. This playfulness is characteristic of Klee's approach to portraiture during his tenure at the Bauhaus. He often explored the intersection of childlike simplicity and sophisticated geometric theory. Technically, the work is executed in oil on gauze mounted on cardboard. This choice of support gives the surface a distinct texture, visible through the thin layers of paint. The grid structure reflects Klee's analytical mind, as he sought to break down visual perception into its basic components. By flattening the image, he removes traditional depth, forcing the viewer to engage with the arrangement of colour and shape rather than a realistic representation of a subject. The work remains a primary example of how Klee utilised abstraction to convey character and mood through minimal means.
