A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, documenting the architectural ruins of the Septizonium in Rome.
This etching depicts the ruins of the Septizonium, a monumental nymphaeum constructed in Rome during the reign of Septimius Severus. Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, a prominent Roman publisher and printmaker, produced this work as part of a larger collection documenting the city's antiquities. The composition captures the remaining facade of the structure, which was a familiar sight to seventeenth-century travellers and scholars studying the remnants of the Roman Empire.
The print employs precise line work to delineate the architectural elements, including the Corinthian columns and the tiered levels of the facade. The artist uses cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, providing a sense of the scale and decay of the site. In the foreground, a small figure provides a sense of proportion, contrasting the human scale with the massive, weathered stone of the ancient monument. The surrounding terrain is rendered with lighter, gestural lines, suggesting the unexcavated state of the area during the period.
De' Rossi's work reflects the interest in classical archaeology that defined the Roman art scene in the late seventeenth century. By documenting these structures, he provided a visual record for those unable to visit the site in person. The inclusion of descriptive text at the base of the image aligns with the conventions of contemporary topographical publications, which sought to educate the viewer on the history and function of the depicted ruins. The print remains a valuable record of how the Septizonium appeared before its final demolition and the subsequent urban changes in Rome. Its technical execution demonstrates the high standard of printmaking associated with the de' Rossi firm, which was instrumental in disseminating images of Roman heritage across Europe.
