Series VII, No. 7d by Hilma af Klint features a colour wheel and geometric shapes in muted tones, reflecting her interest in spiritual and philosophical concepts. This abstract watercolour is a study in harmony and balance.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She created her first abstract paintings in 1906, several years before Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Malevich. Af Klint believed that she was acting as a medium for higher spiritual powers, and that her paintings were meant to convey messages from these entities. Her work often incorporates geometric shapes, symbols, and words, reflecting her interest in spiritualism, theosophy, and anthroposophy. Series VII, No. 7d features a colour wheel at the top, divided into segments of various hues, from white and grey to blues, purples, greens, yellows, oranges, and black. At the centre of the wheel is a smaller, concentric circle with a rainbow of colours. Below the wheel are geometric shapes in muted tones of grey, beige, pink, and brown. The composition is simple and balanced, with the colour wheel acting as a focal point. The overall effect is one of harmony and balance, reflecting af Klint's interest in spiritual and philosophical concepts.
