Konstantin Korovin's 'Sevastopol in Winter' captures a snow-covered cityscape with a warship in the bay, rendered in muted blues and greys with loose, Impressionistic brushwork.
Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939) was a Russian Impressionist painter, known for his depictions of Russian life, theatre designs, and cityscapes. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Korovin was associated with the Peredvizhniki movement before embracing Impressionism, and he was one of the first Russian painters to adopt Impressionistic techniques. He emigrated to Paris in 1922. 'Sevastopol in Winter' presents a snow-covered view of the Crimean city, likely painted during one of Korovin's travels. The scene is dominated by a large warship in the bay, rendered in muted blues and greys. A tram or open-air carriage moves along the snow-covered embankment in the foreground, with figures dotted along the wall. The sky is a pale, overcast grey, with a hint of pink from the setting sun. The brushwork is loose and expressive, capturing the atmosphere of a cold winter day. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands: the foreground embankment, the middle ground of the bay with the warship, and the distant shore.
