A classic Edo-period triptych by Kano Sansetsu, featuring the Buddha flanked by a dragon and a tiger, rendered in delicate ink wash on silk.
This triptych by Kano Sansetsu depicts the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, flanked by a tiger and a dragon. The central scroll shows the ascetic figure of the Buddha after his period of mountain meditation. His form is rendered with fluid, calligraphic ink lines that suggest both physical exhaustion and spiritual resolve. The surrounding silk is left largely empty, creating a sense of vast, quiet space that draws the viewer toward the central subject.
The flanking scrolls provide a contrast in movement and energy. On the left, a tiger prowls near a pine tree, its body coiled and alert. On the right, a dragon emerges from swirling clouds, representing the elemental forces of nature. The dragon and tiger are traditional motifs in East Asian art, often used to symbolise the duality of yin and yang, or the balance between spiritual and earthly power. Sansetsu, a leader of the Kano school in Kyoto, demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques here. He uses varying densities of ink to create depth and texture, from the soft, misty clouds to the sharp, defined stripes of the tiger.
Kano Sansetsu was known for his idiosyncratic style, which often departed from the more rigid conventions of his predecessors. His work displays a tension between decorative composition and expressive brushwork. This triptych reflects the aesthetic values of the early Edo period, where Buddhist themes were treated with a blend of traditional reverence and individual artistic interpretation. The choice of silk as a medium allows for subtle gradations of tone, which are essential to the atmospheric quality of the work. The scrolls remain a clear example of the Kano school's ability to integrate religious iconography with sophisticated ink painting techniques.
