A classic Victorian oil colour print by George Baxter, depicting a young woman adjusting her bonnet before a mirror.
George Baxter was a pioneer of colour printing in the nineteenth century, developing a method that used multiple wood blocks to apply oil-based inks over a steel-engraved base. This technique allowed for a level of tonal variation and colour depth that was previously difficult to achieve in mass-produced imagery. 'Shall I Succeed?' is a representative example of his output, which often featured sentimental or domestic subjects designed for a growing middle-class market.
The print depicts a young woman in an oval frame, standing before a dressing table mirror. She is adjusting her bonnet, her expression one of quiet contemplation. The composition focuses on the interplay between her green gown and the white apron, rendered with the characteristic precision of Baxter's process. The soft lighting and the oval format draw the viewer into the private, domestic sphere of the subject. The lower portion of the mount includes the distinctive stamp of the Baxter patent, confirming the work as an authentic production from his Northampton Square studio.
Baxter prints were highly popular during the mid-Victorian period, serving as affordable alternatives to paintings for home decoration. They were often sold as individual prints or used as illustrations in books and magazines. This particular work demonstrates the technical control Baxter exerted over his medium, ensuring that the delicate textures of the fabric and the subtle gradients of the background were preserved through the multi-block printing process. The work remains a clear record of the commercial and artistic ambitions of the Victorian print trade, reflecting the era's interest in narrative scenes and refined domesticity.
