Description
Shapinsay in Orkney curves around a quiet turquoise bay, its pale sand and scattered shoreline stones below green fields, red-roofed farm buildings and soft white summer clouds.
Shapinsay is a low-lying agricultural island near Kirkwall in Orkney. Nineteenth-century estate improvements created much of its regular field pattern, while the planned village of Balfour housed estate workers. Fertile pasture continues to make farming an important part of the island’s character.
Pale sand sweeps from the near shore towards a distant cluster of buildings, with rounded grey stones marking the upper beach. Turquoise water deepens gradually away from the edge. Green fields lie beyond the low coast, interrupted by white cottages and red farm roofs beneath an open summer sky carrying long bands of bright cloud.
