A fine art print of a genre scene by Eugene de Blaas, depicting two young women reading a letter together by a stone well in Venice.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was an Austrian painter who spent much of his career in Venice. He is recognised for his genre scenes depicting the daily lives of the Venetian working class, often focusing on the interactions between young women. In this work, two figures are positioned by a stone well, a common architectural feature in Venetian courtyards. One woman holds a letter, while the other leans forward to read its contents, creating a narrative of shared intimacy and curiosity.
The composition is typical of the Academic style, prioritising smooth brushwork, clear lighting, and a balanced arrangement of figures. De Blaas employs a soft, naturalistic palette, focusing on the textures of the women's clothing, from the structured bodice to the layered skirts. The brickwork and stone archway in the background provide a sense of place, grounding the scene in a specific, albeit romanticised, urban environment.
De Blaas was a professor at the Venice Academy, and his technical proficiency is evident in the rendering of the fabric and the subtle expressions on the subjects' faces. His work often captured moments of quiet social exchange, avoiding the grand historical themes favoured by some of his contemporaries in favour of more accessible, human-centred subjects. This print captures the precise detail and tonal quality of the original oil painting, offering a glimpse into the late nineteenth-century Venetian aesthetic.
