A golden sheaf of wheat dominates the canvas in Franz Marc's 'Sheaf of Grain'. Thick brushstrokes and bold colours exemplify the artist's Expressionist style.
Franz Marc, a leading figure in German Expressionism, produced 'Sheaf of Grain'. Marc, born in 1880, was a founder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an art movement that sought to express spiritual truths through abstract forms and symbolic colours. His career was cut short by his death in World War I in 1916. 'Sheaf of Grain' depicts a close-up view of a bundle of wheat in a field. The composition is dominated by the golden yellow of the grain, applied with thick, visible brushstrokes that give the painting a tactile quality. The surrounding field is rendered in shades of green, while the sky is a pale blue. The painting's style is characterised by its bold colours and simplified forms, typical of Expressionist art. Marc's interest in nature and his desire to convey emotional and spiritual meaning are evident in this work.
