Description
Shieldaig in Highland Wester Ross follows a blue shoreline beneath a snowy mountain crown, with white cottages and rust coloured lower hills catching clear sunshine on a bright spring day.
Shieldaig developed as a planned village in 1800, initially intended to train seamen during the Napoleonic wars. Fishing later became its principal role, reflected in a name derived from the Old Norse for herring bay. The coastal settlement lies near the Torridon hills in Wester Ross.
White houses gather along a low rocky shore, broken by a few red and blue facades. Calm blue water carries pale vertical reflections below green fields and scattered trees. Behind the village, rust coloured hills rise towards a broad snowy mountain dome. Grey foreground boulders and dark shrubs frame the inlet, while extensive high snow above bare lower slopes suggests clear early spring weather.
