A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting Shikamatsu Kanroku’s manservant, Jinzaburô, carrying a basket of fruit while a cat arches its back behind him. This work exemplifies Kuniyoshi's skill in portraying dynamic scenes with expressive figures.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period. He is celebrated for his dynamic and imaginative prints, particularly those depicting warriors, mythical creatures, and historical scenes. Kuniyoshi's work is distinguished by its bold compositions, expressive figures, and incorporation of Western artistic influences. He was a master of colour printing techniques and is considered one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e. This woodblock print depicts Shikamatsu Kanroku’s manservant, Jinzaburô. Jinzaburô is shown carrying a basket laden with what appear to be oranges or similar citrus fruit. He is dressed in a patterned green and blue kimono, with a sword at his side. A snarling cat arches its back behind him, adding a dramatic element to the scene. The print includes text panels with Japanese calligraphy, providing context to the narrative. The composition is flat, typical of ukiyo-e, with strong outlines and areas of solid colour. The print is part of a series illustrating loyal and brave retainers.
