Shimada: The Suruga Bank of the Oi River - Utagawa Hiroshige

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the busy riverbank at Shimada during the Edo period.

This woodblock print is part of the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, often referred to as the Hoeido Tokaido. It depicts the crossing of the Oi River at Shimada, a location notorious for its difficulty. Because the river lacked a bridge, travellers relied on porters to carry them and their belongings across the water. Hiroshige captures the vastness of the riverbank, using a high vantage point to show the scale of the human activity against the natural environment.

The composition is dominated by the wide, sandy expanse of the riverbank, which contrasts with the deep blue of the water. Small figures are scattered across the scene, engaged in the laborious process of crossing. Some are carried on the backs of porters, while others wait with their luggage. The artist employs a restrained palette, using subtle gradations of colour to suggest the atmosphere of the day. The inclusion of a lone pine tree in the foreground provides a sense of scale and anchors the composition.

Hiroshige was a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, and this series established his reputation as a chronicler of the Japanese landscape. His work often focuses on the interaction between people and their surroundings, capturing the daily life of travellers along the major routes of the Edo period.
