A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the first station of the Tokaido Road at dawn, featuring sailing ships and a busy post town.
Shinagawa: Sunrise is a woodblock print from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, published by Hoeido. This series documents the journey along the coastal route connecting Edo to Kyoto. Shinagawa was the first station after leaving Edo, serving as a busy post town for travellers beginning their long trek.
Hiroshige depicts the early morning atmosphere with a focus on the transition between the dark blue water and the pale sky. The composition is divided between the bustling activity of the post town on the right and the calm bay on the left. Several sailing vessels are visible on the water, their white sails catching the first light of day. On the shore, figures move through the street, suggesting the start of a day for merchants and travellers alike. The architecture of the buildings is rendered with clean lines, showing the typical structure of Edo-period inns and shops.
The use of colour is restrained, relying on gradients of blue and soft pinks to convey the time of day. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige to produce these images. The series gained popularity for its ability to capture the specific mood of different locations along the route, moving away from purely idealised views to include the daily life of the people. This print remains a clear example of the ukiyo-e tradition, which focused on the floating world of travel, leisure, and urban life in Japan. The balance between the natural elements of the water and the man-made structures of the town provides a sense of order and quiet observation.
