A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers caught in a sudden rainstorm at the Shono station of the Tokaido road.
Shono: Driving Rain is a celebrated woodblock print from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. This series documents the journey along the coastal route connecting Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige captures a sudden downpour at the forty-fifth station, Shono, where travellers scramble up a steep slope to find shelter.
The composition relies on diagonal lines to convey the force of the rain. The bamboo grove in the background bends under the wind, while the figures in the foreground lean forward, their bodies angled against the elements. Hiroshige employs a technique known as bokashi, or colour gradation, to create the atmospheric effect of the storm. The sky transitions from a dark, heavy grey at the top to a lighter tone, suggesting the density of the falling water. The figures are depicted with simple, expressive forms, their straw capes and hats rendered with minimal detail to focus on their movement and urgency.
This print demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to translate weather conditions into a visual medium. By omitting unnecessary detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the immediate sensation of the storm. The contrast between the dark, slanted lines of the rain and the lighter, muted tones of the path creates a sense of depth and motion. The work remains a primary example of the ukiyo-e tradition, which often focused on the transient nature of life and the environment. It provides a glimpse into the daily experiences of travellers in nineteenth-century Japan, capturing a fleeting moment of hardship during a long journey.
