This woodblock print originates from the Shunkei gafu, a collection of works by the Japanese artist Mori Shunkei. The composition adheres to the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the observation of natural subjects, specifically birds, insects, and flora. The image depicts a pair of grasshoppers positioned amongst stalks of rice and wild grasses, rendered with a focus on biological accuracy and balanced negative space.
The artist employs a restrained palette, utilising soft earth tones, muted greens, and subtle ochre to define the organic forms. The lines are thin and precise, characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques prevalent during the Edo period.
