A detailed Rajasthani miniature painting depicting a Jain teacher instructing a group of devotees, rendered in opaque watercolour on paper.
This miniature painting, attributed to the Rajasthani artist Sahib Ram, depicts a formal scene of religious instruction. A Shvetambara Jain teacher sits upon a raised platform, his hands gesturing as he addresses a diverse audience of devotees. The composition is divided into distinct zones, separating the teacher from the listeners, who are arranged in rows across the floor. The figures are rendered with precise outlines and flat colour fields, characteristic of the late eighteenth-century Jaipur style.
The artist employs a clear, narrative structure to organise the space. On the left, a group of women in traditional attire sit together, while men in turbans and dhotis occupy the foreground and centre. The architectural setting is suggested through vertical pillars and a patterned backdrop, which provides a sense of order to the gathering. The palette consists of muted earth tones, punctuated by the bright red of the teacher's platform and the decorative borders of the garments.
Sahib Ram was active in the court of Jaipur, where he produced numerous portraits and courtly scenes. His work often features a refined approach to facial features and costume details. In this piece, the focus remains on the interaction between the teacher and his pupils, capturing a moment of quiet concentration. The use of opaque watercolour allows for the application of fine details, such as the patterns on the textiles and the subtle expressions of the figures. This work offers a view into the religious life and social customs of the period, presented with the technical control associated with the Rajasthani tradition. The painting is framed by a simple red and yellow border, which contains the scene and directs the eye toward the central figure of the teacher.
