A detailed study of the weathered, seventeenth-century leather binding of Jan de Bisschop's Signorum veterum icones.
This image captures the weathered exterior of a historical binding associated with Jan de Bisschop's Signorum veterum icones. Published in the late seventeenth century, this collection of etchings documented classical sculptures found in Rome. De Bisschop, a lawyer by profession and an accomplished amateur artist, produced these works to provide Dutch artists with a visual reference for antique statuary, as travel to Italy remained difficult for many during this period.
The physical object shown here displays the characteristic signs of age found on seventeenth-century leather bindings. The surface exhibits a mottled, ochre-toned patina, with visible scuffs, abrasions, and areas of wear that reveal the history of the volume. The texture of the leather is uneven, suggesting a long period of handling and storage. The spine edge shows signs of fraying, typical for books of this era that have survived centuries of use in libraries or private collections.
As a document of the Dutch Golden Age, the work represents the period's fascination with classical antiquity and the dissemination of knowledge through print culture. While the interior pages contain the etchings for which the publication is known, the cover itself serves as a tactile record of the book's survival. The muted, earthy tones and the organic irregularities of the leather surface offer a glimpse into the material culture of the seventeenth century. This print provides a study of historical texture, suitable for those interested in the physical preservation of early modern printed works.
