A detailed study of Silkie chickens by Mori Sosen, capturing the soft texture of their plumage through precise brushwork and a naturalistic approach.
Mori Sosen, a member of the Maruyama-Shijo school, is widely recognised for his meticulous observation of the natural world. This work depicts a group of Silkie chickens, a breed noted for their unique, fluffy plumage. The artist employs a delicate brush technique to capture the soft, downy texture of the feathers, contrasting the white birds with the singular dark specimen in the centre of the composition.
The composition is balanced, with the birds arranged across a muted, golden-toned background that suggests a simple, open space. Sosen avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the physical characteristics and postures of the chickens. His approach reflects the school's emphasis on sketching from life, a departure from the more stylised conventions of earlier Japanese painting traditions. The subtle shading and precise rendering of the beaks, combs, and feet demonstrate a high level of technical control.
Sosen spent much of his career studying animals in their natural habitats, which allowed him to imbue his subjects with a sense of individual character. In this piece, the birds are shown in various states of movement and rest, creating a naturalistic scene that avoids static poses. The use of ink and colour on silk provides a soft, atmospheric quality, typical of the period's aesthetic preferences. This print captures the quiet observation and technical skill that defined Sosen's contribution to Edo-period art, offering a clear view of his ability to render animal forms with both accuracy and grace.
