A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Henry Le Keux, after J.M.W. Turner, depicting the serene atmosphere of Simmer Lake in the Yorkshire Dales.
This fine engraving, titled Simmer Lake near Askrig, demonstrates the technical precision of Henry Le Keux. The work is based on a design by J.M.W. Turner, reflecting the collaborative nature of nineteenth-century topographical print production. Le Keux was a master of the copperplate medium, capable of translating the atmospheric effects of Turner's original sketches into a monochromatic tonal range.
The composition captures the quietude of the Yorkshire Dales. In the foreground, cattle rest near the water, while figures attend to a small boat and cart. These elements provide a sense of scale against the expansive, calm surface of the lake. The middle ground is defined by the gentle slopes of the hills, which recede into the distance under a sky filled with heavy, rolling clouds. The artist employs fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques to suggest the texture of the terrain and the shifting light across the water.
Such prints were often produced for travelogues or topographical volumes, intended to document the British countryside for a growing audience of armchair travellers. The attention to detail in the foreground figures, combined with the atmospheric rendering of the distant mountains, creates a balanced view of the region. The print retains the original plate marks and inscriptions, which identify both the designer and the engraver, as well as the publisher, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green. This piece offers a glimpse into the collaborative output of the period, where the skill of the engraver was essential to the dissemination of artistic vision.
