A formal portrait of the physicist Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, rendered in a traditional profile style.
This portrait depicts Sir Benjamin Thompson, the Anglo-American physicist and inventor who gained international recognition for his work on thermodynamics and his administrative reforms in Bavaria. The painting is a copy by the American artist William Page, based on an original work by the German painter Moritz Kellerhoven.
Thompson is shown in profile, a convention often used in formal portraiture to convey a sense of intellectual focus and stoic character. He wears a dark military-style uniform, which reflects his service as a high-ranking official in the Bavarian government. The inclusion of the Order of Saint Stanislaus star on his chest indicates his status and the honours he received during his time in Europe.
William Page, known for his technical experimentation with pigments and glazes, captures the subject with a restrained palette. The dark, atmospheric background ensures that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the subject's features and the precise details of his uniform. The lighting is directed to model the face, highlighting the contours of the jaw and the texture of the hair.
This work provides a visual record of a figure whose scientific contributions, particularly regarding the nature of heat, influenced the development of modern physics. By reproducing Kellerhoven's original composition, Page preserved the likeness of a man who navigated complex political and scientific circles during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The portrait serves as a study in the formal traditions of the period, where the sitter's identity is defined by both his physical appearance and the symbols of his public office.
